SMO Ajax Shoutbox is based on Ajax Shoutbox By Risp, with many new and addon features. SMO Ajax Shoutbox is a powerfull website tool for chatting using AJAX Technology, it allow users to chat instantly, without reloading the page, also it notify users about the arrival of a new Shout with a sound that can be disabled by simply clicking on the Green button under the Shoutbox ( It is red if sound is disabled). This shoutbox use Internal smilies or, at user’s option, smilies from SMF or Joomla board forums, it also supports bbcodes.

I’ve downloaded the current version released today.. I have problems to install the component.
I always get the error message:
File …\webroot\joomla\media\install_465d6a5fd2b55\smo_ajax_shoutbox.class.php does not exist!

Could you please re-download the zip file? I didn’t pack the component and the module in the previous archive (sorry my bad), I did pack them this time, remember you have to extract this archive and use the com_ and the mod_ archives included…
Oh and just to avoid some future questions, the source for the notification button is written in Macromedia Flash 5, and in included with the archive (Don’t forget to mail me with the newer one :))

Great component. Clean and simple. I especially like the ability to have the users name appear as the screen name or as the real name.
I’m having a problem that I can’t figure out. When I type a shout and hit enter, I’m taken to my home page and the shout is not recorded. There may be a code conflict. I did enter your javascript on the template Index.php. as needed. Suggestions?
In the meantime, I have your other shout box on my site and it works fine. Thanks for putting out a great product!

What browser are you using? if it’s firefox or opera I know that there’s an error console you can see errors from javascripts, could you please paste what happens?
Oh BTW what you pasted I hope you pasted it in the index.php of your template not your main index.php…

Hi, I have installed this - excellent work - thanks very much! I am trying to tidy the layout up a bit, is there anyway of not displaying the flash button but setting the sound to ‘on’ as default so users all get sound and are not able to turn it off?

I think the BG of the text box is set by your browser, I don’t remember if I set it manually or not, try another browser (perhaps OS) and tell me if it stays the same, if not then I’ll check if I did include it hardcoded and change it…
Worked perfect until I refreshed the page, then the letters of the shouted messages turned into some kind of monkey letters, obviously utf-8 encoding problem. My site is using charset windows 1251, and I can’t handle the problem

The only thing is that I don’t know how to change the font and fontsize of the shoutbox. It is standard in Times New Roman 12p. I would like it in arial in 8 or 10p.

I only have one question :
Is there maybe an addon that can log the writer’s IP address?
I have left it in public use (no need to login to shout) because I wanted my users to be able to write something if e.g they have a login problem.
but a few days ago someone wrote not polite things, so an option for IP logging would be very usefull
I think this is MY issue… at one point I installed the gd2 libs and this forced a complete redo of apache and php…. (Deb stable)…
After this nothing worked and I repaired everything EXCEPT this and other AJAX stuff (some of the comment stuff has funny errors like send button doesn’t work)
I think I’m missing something BUT no idea what…

I think there’s some kind of conflicts on your website, if you use either of FireFox/opera you can open the Javascript error console, clear it and then just type one letter in any of the chat input box, you’ll get an error like this

What I suggest is for you to try and comment the other JS files (even required) and see if it works, if it does then uncomment them one by one until it won’t work and tell me which one conflicts with it, I might be able to change something for you…

How do you remove the border around the shoutbox itself? It is the same color as the font. Other than that everything is working beautifully. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Er, sorry for double post but are you able to increase the limit of how much chat you are able to view? Anyway to increase it so the reader can read further comments not just recent comments. Thanks and sorry again for the double posts.

Hello, I was wondering if there was any possibility to use the ajax shoutbox like in playtalk.net?
I mean with the current one everybody can let a message right? and with the anouncer we can add new registered members or other anouncements. But could we, as in playtalk.net add an entry from a blog (I use myblog but it could be also for mamblog)?
So the ajax shoutbox woul be published in a content item or in a wide module area, possibliy a bit more stylish…
I know this is probably a lot of work, but let me know if this sounds attainable?

I am having a problem with the shoutbox. It won’t update automatically. The only way I can get new “shouts” is to refresh the page. I have pasted the code in the “index.php” file as instructed, and I have even turned the “update” time down to 1 second and still nothing. Could you take a look at my site and maybe give me some tips?

Hi, great work, I just installed this on my site, and I really love it, better than smileytag that I use before.
One question, I’m able to add custom smiley to the configuration, but it wont showed on the smiley page, I mean currently the smiley are shown if I type in the code, but I also want the icon to be showed on the smiley page so people can just click on the icon.
Is there an easy way to do it ?

hi I am having same problem as user above. It wont show in user field when my smf forums are up.
I use 2 separate databases, but use the smf bridge.
however, I am not trying to combine it with smf, I just want it in joomla in the same user block as on the homepage. it works fine until I visit the forums. then I get a similar error as user stated above.

Everything’s fine with installation with just one problem. If I type in more than a few words, the sentences start to jumble together. In other words, the spacings above and below the sentences bunch together in Firefox browser. In Internet Explorer, I can only see the first sentence. The rest is covered up.

Thanks for your work on ShoutBox. I really like it and it installed and just worked very easily.
The one thing that is not working is the sound.
There is no red or green area for me to click on to turn it on or off.
At the moment (clean install) its off. (And as I say, there seems to be no way to turn it on).
Im sure its something I have not done.
Searching the web has yielded no clues.

Can it go into multiple pages, or delete some comments from the top? It’s a very long page

To delete some comments, go into the Administrator back end, and select the ShoutBox Component. From there you can delete all comments, or just the ones you want.
BTW, I still can not get the sound to work.
I have made sure I am using the latest Flash plugin, I have tried it on many different computers using many different browsers, none have the red or green to toggle the sound, so it has to be something coming from my ShoutBox install?

I’ve seen that the timestamp of every entry is saved in the database in the table xxx_liveshoutbox under “time” ìn UNIX-format in order to calculate the time since the last entry (in the header-line). I’d like to fill in a little routine into the source-code in order to convert the time into “usual” time and let the timestamp of each entry appear in the shoutbox-window itself.
I just can’t find the place where this routine should go (I know, I’m a PHP-noob… Sorry me!).

you have to add the required code. I believe its listed in the readme file.

I have a small prob, I use greek letters but even my page is encoded to urf8 i see alien-letters after refreshing my page. The good thing is that i see normal letters while i write, but not after revisit, as i mentioned before. The table that data are stored is encoded with utf8_general_ci. Also the page is encoded with utf8

I’m using IE 7, so I’m thinking it could be something to do with this.
Another theory is that my index.php(template) is dynamically built, so I’m guessting the problem is most likely to do with this!

the smo shoutbox does not do annoucnements, the additional plugin call shoutbox announcer does that.

I am a newbie on Joomla, I have CommunityBuilder installed, I really liked the JoomlaComment untill I saw your shoutbox, I have installed it and I am having a problem in trying to make a link on the mainmenu titled shout which when clicked opens a page in main frame with SMOshoutbox in it, like your page now.
this is a very low level of question as far as you are concerned, i dont know if you hae time to explain me. so look forward to your answer.

For this site, I had the same issue with the Ajax Shoutbox but did not this problem with Mosets Shout It!
For some reason, some of my sites foud in different servers worked with the original Ajax Shoutbox

Hi, I’ve just installed shoutbox, but now it seems i can’t remove any post by using the ShoutBox Manager. I can see all posts and i can select them but i don’t have the usal buttons at the top like delete or unpublish. How to remove a post wich i don’t want? Am I missing some files?

I can’t use special chars..? Only with UTF-8 but if i refresh it, its all messed up.. I’ve changed the charset in the module php but didn’t function, i changed it in the componen, didn’t funciton…

By the way: Optional, it would be very usefull to display sended time on de chat.. Example: 12:56 UserName Mesage and the bb codes in a dropdown next to the input section : )

anyone disagree with that? i dont want to take a project that is actually being worked on

ok, this shoutbox is great my friend has it on his website emoforum.org and i put it on my website http://emoworld.hostwq.net and when some1 types something, and then they press send, the page refreshes, on my emoworld, but on the emoforum.org it doesn’t refresh the page when some1 sends a message, can u plz help me, can u send a message to me at mod_mike@emmoforum.org or mjbennett06@gmail.com

So sorry dude but english only please, Anyway with a little help from my friend I understood your question, and actually your problem is well known, I’m planning a re-write of the shoutbox to pass everything between the page and the database in UTF-8 and decode properly for the pages… for now you can’t use ñ nor tildes… sorry

Is there any ‘archives’ from previous posts ? And can we set how many posts that show in frame ? Cause Id like to have at least 25 shouts so my visitor can see previous chats..

on line 11 there is a max comments variable, i set mine at 300 and i get quite a history, then the module has a hard coded limit of 10 messages when a page is loaded, but if you view the shoutbox items in admin you will have a large paged list of archived comments, remember they take up space on your db the more you have archived

But it still shows last 10 messages, it’s not change to 50 messages. Why is this happen ?

on line 1170 (or close) look for

i’d like to use the shoutbox as a very simple reservation system. To make it work correctly the shoutbox should give some time information. So it should delete EVERY message at the end of EVERY day or simply add date and time to every post. Does anybody knows how to fix my problem?

It wants to open the file /path/to/joomla/”administrator/components/com_smo_ajax_shoutbox/smo_ajax_shoutbox.cfg.php” in write mode, it seems you have a simple permission problem…

I have a slight issue with French localization : You translated “Last Message” by “Dernière Message”. Exact translation is “Dernier Message” (no accent, no final e ).
I found the French file and made the translation, but then, it brakes the shoutbox as soon as I make any modification to French.php in the components/SMO…/language.
Could you please be kind and make a new build with the right translation ? As of today, it does not display well due to ther special character è (see here : http://www.aocstars.com).

I can’t release a new version now because there’s a lot of changes in my todo but I don’t have the time to do them, in the mean time, I have committed this modification to the darcs repository (Thanks BTW), in case you don’t know how to use darcs I packed the file for you here, could you try it and report back please?

I used this script’s older version on another site. I downloaded this one, installed the component and module, insert the 2 line to the theme’s index.php…and I can see the script, but it isn’t working.

Purpose: To block spams
What does the 10 digit value mean in the back end Time column where ShoutBox Items are managed?
To block spam by IP address, I am collecting IP addresses, using the front page “Latest Message” time value. That time is then searched in my another component that is statistical to get the IP address. Then finaly I go to my 3rd component that Blocks IP addresses.
My wish: either
- Be able to see each entry’s IP address, else
- The Time Value in the backend under ShoutBox Items page become a simple, normal or usual value like 23:59 May 8 2008 etc instead of the 10 digit value that is not obvious for the most people.
- If above 2 wishes are not plausable, would you please put Time value explanation in the ReadMe.txt file? It is the explanation of the 10 digit value that is currently used for the Time in the backend page. I searched in this page on all comments about the time value, I only get the clue of it that says the time is UNIX time bla bla. I was not still able to understand UNIX time and normal relationship.
I corrected the lines in index.php with the new path, but nothing happened.

Hello. I have some problems with SMO Ajax shoutbox. When I post a message, its ok, the shoutbox refreshes. But when I post again, the shoutbox doesn’t refresh. Now I have to manually refresh the whole page. Any ideas? Is there a way to remove guest_xyz random nick? I looked at the code but found nothing. Thanks

Shoutbox does not seam to work with Joomla 1.5.9? Everything is fine if not logged in, but as soon as log in, getting errors on page and get this:

Greets… Been trying (and trying) but yes, there is some bugs in this mod. The bad thing is, there is no more forum support, as the arabic lounge site is gone and appears to be up for sale. I have Joomla 1.5.9 and CB 1.2 with Legacy Mode on already. I inserted the code into my header. But I get no sound, and the box/text seems to be a bit jumbled. Near the bottom I see this;

I have a problem with the shoutbox. It has always worked perfectly and it’s a great application, but when I tried to put a new template on my website a few days ago (rt_novus) it didn’t work anymore. When I type a message the page refreshes but my message doesn’t appear in the shoutbox. I don’t get any error messages, it just doesn’t respond. I’ve gone back to using my old template now and the shoutbox works again so clearly the template is causing the problem. How can I fix this?
I have joomla 1.0.13 and community builder.

1. I am using smo_ajax_shoutbox only for registered users. but somtimes I got some messages without name!!!!!for example:- “: Message”
2. in backend new ShoutBox items go to last. I want to see new shout item first.
i found a major bug, if your shoutbox gets over 70,000 shouts then it wont even let the page load, gives no errors
you must ‘truncate table #__liveshoutbox’ if this happens
this must be done in order to stop the bug. it would be silly to use bigint, as truncate can be done as a cron job once a month and be fine

I was asked by my host to optimize file mod_smo_ajax_shoutbox.php… can anyone give me an insight? According to host, it was taking up resources on server. I need help! Thank you.
Guys I’m sorry but I dropped this project in favor of WSShoutBox for the moment the progress is slow because I’m a little busy, but during this week and the next I should at least have an alpha ready.. I will keep you informed of the progress!

No clue what you have to do with this project, but I assume, it’s something different, but looking pretty the same

Any ideas what is causing this error? i’ve followed the readme, installed the com then the mod and addedthe lines before the end of the header tag. But the buttons seem to be broken.
