Good evening…

I was sleeping 10 minutes ago, and I woke up because something was touching me, and voila, my cat paid me a visit after he has disappeared for 8 months :D Yuuupi… and guess what? For all this time outside, he has not changed, he always stays beside the window, and whatever I do, he wants and insists on going outside LOL, look at the pictures below, he’s always staring outside!! crazy lol… You have no idea how hard it was to take those pictures, Spike refuses to turn his sight away from the window, he’s just crazy!!! but I love him :D

Right after I took the pictures I opened the window and he’s gone, I hope he comes back more often, I’m not even sure what he’s eating, he never eats here!! weird!!!

Gimme Wallpaper, or Gwall, is a small script to randomize and rotate your wallpapers, it is very fast and very clean ( as it is only a bash script ), I use it everyday now since it is so boring to have one single wallpaper all day long…

To install it, just download the installer script and run it (as your user not as root !!!), it will get all the requirement you need for Gwall…

Last night was a very bad night, I couldn’t sleep because of the Christmas tree I have in my room, well you know what I’m talking about lol, here’s what I had in my room: (c.f: The pictures below.)

  • One computer running pfSense (1), used as my main router, serves 2 subnets, 192.168.2.0/24 for my server(s) and 192.168.1.0/24 for my laptop, Playstation etc…
  • One computer running FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE (2) and oh well it’s my server, this website is running on it :)
  • One LinkSYS router (3), used as an access point, for my wired/wireless clients…
  • 3 USB Hard Disks, 160Gb (4), 500 Gb (5) and 750 Gb (6)

So it was a huge, noisy Christmas tree with lots of LEDs always blinking, so today I woke up, took the carpet of the whole room away so I can have a Ethernet cable between my FreeBOX and my router, and I threw the whole thing in my closet lol…

I should be worried about heat though that’s why I’m gonna install a couple more fans for my server, the router doesn’t heat very much…

Hello,

Well In this article I will be discussing jails, what they are, what are the benefits of having them and most importantly how to create/manage and use them.

Introduction
Jails are like they are called, Jail to processes running inside them, a process running inside a jail cannot have any access to the host it is running inside, which is a huge security improvement, let’s have some examples…
This website is running on FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE it has Web/Mail/MySQL servers, imagine, somehow, my WEB server ( apache ) was compromised, the attacker will have access to the WEB pages, MySQL databases and Mails… So to improve security I set up the Jail system from scratch on a clean installation, now each server (WEB, MySQL, Mail) runs in it’s virtual server, if one is compromised at least it stays that way, there is no way an attacker could access another jail.

Good Morning :)

Today I stumbled upon a very interesting panel, The Avant Window Navigator, it is like the Mac OS X panel, 3D, Buttons bounce, flip, glow etc… It is very pretty and it replaces every widget we have ever used…
March 16th 2008
The Avant panel can’t operate without compiz, so first you need to install compiz, there is plenty of articles around the net, just search for an article that works for your distribution, once that’s done and tested you should install the AVN…

Now you should remove all Gnome panel, just follow this tutorial, don’t forget to add AVN to your session.

This is merely a TIP, but It’s very usefull, if, for some reason, you would like to get rid of all gnome panels but you don’t wish to lose what gnome-panel offers with it then this is your answer…

First off, here’s a Screenshot to show you what I’m talking about.

We don’t really remove the Panels, we just hide them, so start off by removing all panels, you’ll have one panel left that you can’t remove so do the following:

Open Gconf-editor and goto to /apps/panel/toplevels and set these values:
auto_hide: yes
auto_hide_size: 1
expand: no
hide_delay: 1
monitor: 3
unhide_delay: 10000
x: 10000
y: 10000

Howdy! Today I was browsing the net, and I stumbled on ( literary using stumble upon firefox extension ) on some very nice web tools, Tools that I never thought existed before, here’s a list of what I found out very interesting.

  • YouOS:
This is a very interesting javascript based (Entirely actually but of course on the client side) program, which is a very customizable OS, with writers, Mp3 player and many many programs, It’s very good because you virtually take your OS with you wherever you go!
  • meebo:
This is another interesting application, it’s a web based IM (Aim, Google Talks, MSN, Yahoo!) kinda like e-messenger, but you will always feel like you are on your desktop, you’ll have resizable/movable and closable windows which gives you a great feeling while enjoying your IM without the need to install any software on your PC!
  • Splashup:
    It’s a very good photoshop-like online application.

Click here to check the full list.
